Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery

Welcome to the Hilltop Historical Society's
Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery
Web Site.

The Hilltop Historical Society was founded in 1986 to promote the History of the Hilltop Area of Columbus, Ohio.

We host the Annual Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery Memorial Ceremony on the 2nd Sunday in June at 3 pm.

The Ceremony has been held annually since 1895. Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery is the 3rd largest Confederate Cemetery north of the Mason-Dixon Line.

On Sunday, June 13, 2010 at 3:00 pm, The Hillltop Historical Society hosted the Rededication of the Cemetery and  the 115th Annual Memorial Ceremony. Our Guest Speaker was Bernard Blizzard, the Director of the Dayton National Cemetery who oversees the cemetery.

In the past two years, The Veterans Administration has reclaimed the land, cleaned and realigned the headstones and removed the dead trees of the cemetery to properly honor the 2260 Americans who could not go home.

During the Service, Mr Blizzard announced the plans to refurish the arch, statue and stone, the future memorials to 13 of those buried there currently with no headstone and the replacement of over 2,000 American flags that the Girl Scouts put out each Memorial Day

Visitors to the Memorial Ceremony are welcome to attend in period costume

Camp Chase Restoration Projects

Between Jul 5th and Aug 5th more restoration will be taking place at Camp Chase. The Statue on top of the monument will be going to Cleveland for 2 weeks to a  conservation shop for restoration. The Arch and Rock will also under go a restoration as well as the podium.

The ongoing project to memorialize the 13 known unmarked graves is almost complete.  One the proposals for the remedy are reviewed the next and final steps can be completed.

Our grateful thanks to Bernard Blizzard, the Director of the Dayton National Cemetery for his continued intrest and support of Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery. Mr Blizzard is also supplying the local Girl Scout Troop who has put out American Flags on every grave on Memorial Day for the past 25 years a complete new set of flags for every grave.  Many of the flags were in need of replacement.
